A Tribe Called Quest’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad & Adrian Younge Are Doing The Score For Netflix’s Luke Cage
Ali Shaheed Muhammad spent years producing and DJing in a Tribe Called Quest, and he also founded the neo-soul supergroup Lucy Pearl. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles orchestral soul producer Adrian Younge has made two albums with Ghostface Killah, and he also did the score for the great 2009 blaxploitation homage Black Dynamite. Together, Muhammad and Younge produced “untitled 06,” from Kendrick Lamar’s recent untitled unmastered album. These guys are a natural match for one another, so it’s very cool that they’re getting together to score the forthcoming Netflix Marvel series Luke Cage, as Pitchfork reports.
Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that the two of them are doing the score: “It’s very sophisticated. I mean, it’s got a ’90s hip-hop vibe, but it’s really forward-thinking.” That sounds great! Coker’s involvement in the show might also be interesting to music dorks. He’s a former music journalist, and his excellent Biggie biography Notorious, published through Vibe, was the basis for the Biggie biopic of the same title, which Coker co-wrote.
In any case, this show looks awesome. Here’s the trailer:
Luke Cage is coming to Netflix 9/30.
