Charli XCX – “Vroom Vroom” Video
UK pop diva Charli XCX has been trying to give her sound a complete makeover, a much edgier, audacious, more overtly seductive one. Her four-track Vroom Vroom EP accelerated the transformation along with the announcement of what she calls her experimental pop label of the same name, which combines her “love for bubblegum pop with mystery and darkness.” The EP is just that: the same buoyant sensibilities from “Fancy” mixed with the sounds of enigmatic producer and PC Music affiliate SOPHIE. Her newfound gall led her to whiff on her cover of the Stooges’ seminal classic “No Fun” last week, but her video for the EP’s title track is sweet, sultry redemption.
The visuals are the pop singer’s vision for her label come to life. With lots of black leather, it plays off light and shadow, with black-and-white solitary shots contrasted against bright, bursting colors and the pop star surrounded by people. To say it embodies the EP’s sound would be a huge understatement. Despite the obvious attempt at a transformation unfolding before your eyes, it still works. She kills the choreography, and it doesn’t feel contrived. The clip is only just over three minutes long, but the rich and vivacious shots give it a cinematic quality that makes it feel longer. Just because you could see Charli step into her cocoon as a caterpillar, doesn’t mean she hasn’t emerged a butterfly that can sting like a bee. Watch.
