The Hotelier – “Soft Animal”
“Make me feel alive, make me believe that I don’t have to die,” Christian Holden wails on “Soft Animal,” the second single from the Hotelier’s upcoming Goodness. It’s one of those climactic, singalong moments that the Massachusetts band has perfected the build-up to over their three album history. “Make me believe that there’s a God sometimes.” He’s bolstered by gang vocals from the rest of the group.
“Soft Animal” is framed by nature, as most songs on the new album are (hence the green color scheme used for much of it), taking place in a cabin somewhere deep in the woods. Holden sees a deer outside the window — “Fawn doe, light snow/ Spots on brown of white” — and it sparks a revelation. Sometimes the smallest things inspire the grandest thoughts, tiny particles add up to a larger whole. “I can hear the rustling as you go,” he notes as the doe scampers back from where it came, away from civilization, and something clicks. It’s a reminder that even when someone leaves, we go on existing and so do they, and we have to keep going on even if it feels impossible. “Make me feel alive, make me believe that all my selves align” — it’s a lot to ask of one little deer, but the Hotelier make the most of it.
