Thomas Cohen – “Ain’t Gonna Be More Rain” (Stereogum Premiere)
Thomas Cohen, formerly the frontman of the band S.C.U.M., was 21 years old when they split. Cohen’s life soon presented a different set of much more personal subjects to draw from. His marriage and the birth of his two sons gave his songwriting a newfound focus and clarity, and the untimely death of his wife Peaches Geldof gave it deeper emotive potency. His new album, Bloom Forever, is a chronological journey from the dissolution of S.C.U.M. to the present, with all of the disorienting, joyous, and sorrowful turns documented. “Ain’t Gonna Be No Rain” is a testament of inner strength and conviction over shimmering twang and beautiful piano with a huge rallying chorus with Cohen’s filling, vivacious voice lifting it. Listen.
