Joey Purp – “Cornerstore” (Feat. Saba & theMIND)
SaveMonian and Chicago representer Joey Purp has always impressed me when I hear him on features, but for some reason I’ve never delved into his music. It’s hard to navigate all the way through a crew and listen to all its members, but Purp is one not to sleep on. His iiiDrops project doesn’t have an official release date yet, but I definitely won’t be ignoring it if even a few songs are as good as the lead single, “Cornerstore.” Purp simply goes in. He weaves a tale of black strife in Chicago around a simple trip to get chips and candy at the corner store amid personal tales and his aspirations for his career. Wunderkind Thelonius Martin produces with additional help from Donnie Trumpet’s triumphant horn. The vivid storytelling combined with a beat that’s easy to ride to makes for a nice trip. Accompany Purp and friends to the “Cornerstore” and get a treat.
iiiDrops is out soon.
