Owen Rabbit – “Weeds” (Stereogum Premiere)
Melbourne-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Owen Rabbit makes an eclectic brand of experimental electro. He incorporates pop sensibilities, the suspense-building of EDM, and deft musicality from several other genres, melding it into something all his own.
“Weeds” is taken from his self-titled debut EP due this summer. He mixes lingering, prolonged synth with warped, quick synth flourishes, rolling, stuttering drums, and loops made with toys, applying his penchant for pop with the repeated refrain, “Weeds keeping growing, and I keep cutting them/ Pull them out of the roots so they won’t die.” In a smooth monotone, he intones about staying invigorated despite the tediousness of everyday life, and then breaks the monotony with soulful wails while the energy ramps up on the track, careening into a controlled cacophony with unorthodox sounds and timing. This is the perfect song to get you through hump day as Rabbit does precisely what he sings about — cutting through the mundanity. Listen.
The Owen Rabbit EP is out in July.
