“Drown,” the second single from Cat Be Damned’s upcoming new tape, Daydreams In A Roach Motel, has the same earnest, insular affectation as the first. And just like “Soft Collision,” the song has a subtly violent undercurrent that stands in stark contrast to the pleasant warmth of the music itself. “What’s the feeling lighting matches on your hand? Against your teeth?” Erik Phillips wonders as they contemplate the scars we bear from opening ourselves up to others (“‘Why don’t you show me one?'” a third party asks of them in the first verse. “‘Break the skin with all the glass that’s in your hands.'”).

“‘Drown’ came to me in a moment of near-possession on a very hot day last summer while I hung out by the Rappahannock River in Fredericksburg, Virginia,” they explained to The Fader. “It’s heavy with an indistinct feeling of guilt that carries an emotional and also physical weight. The words get into spiritual and bodily injury, but I think the track itself is the gentlest one on the record, which sort of counteracts the lyrical weight.” Listen below.
