Toby Coke – “Never Be Alone” (Stereogum Premiere)
Toby Coke is a band born out of the solitude that moving to a new city can bring. That seclusion leaves a lot of time for wandering contemplation, and those thoughts are reflected in the band’s heavy lyrics and existential exploration. “Never Be Alone” is the first single from their upcoming album Time Negator, due this later summer as the first installment of Infinity Cat’s third annual cassette series. The song begins bleak with dark, vivid imagery over warped, siren-like interlocking guitar patterns and a repetitive bass line, creating a nice discordant tension with the bouncy melody of the hook. But it ends on a hopeful note with the line “I’m connected to the whole cosmos, so I won’t be alone.” Listen.
