Following Backlash M.I.A. Says She May Pull Out Of Afropunk Fest
The ever politically-inclined M.I.A. recently spoke her mind about the most prominent musical voices (specifically Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar) in the Black Lives Matter movement and their neglect in acknowledging that “Muslim lives matter” in a profile featured in The Evening Standard. Since then she’s been chosen to headline Afropunk’s London festival, and potential attendees have expressed disapproval of her headlining a festival meant to highlight alternative black music in light of her comments. Several people went to twitter to voice their concerns.
- @afropunk You'll have a serious boycott of the London event if @MIAuniverse preforms, no apologies. no concessions. — No MIA @ #AfroPunk

Smh at AfroPunk having MIA headline a festival after her very anti-black comments which were VERY recent

M.I.A. has responded in kind with a tweet that addressed the criticism, saying she will not play the festival if it’s in the best interest of the BLM movement.
If pulling the show saves the cause and lives then that's what I'll do.

In a since deleted tweet, she also mentioned that Afropunk founder Matthew Morgan is “mixed Black and Israeli,” and that caught her more flack on Twitter as she didn’t seem to be apologetic for her initial comments and there are many Afropunk enthusiasts calling from her removal from the lineup on Twitter again.
M.I.A. at least has one supporter in fellow controversy monger Azealia Banks. Banks herself has a complicated relationship with Twitter to say the least, but she came to defense of her peer via Instagram:
Leave M.I.A the f-ck alone. You guys are idiots and have COMPLETELY missed the point of what she’s trying to tell you. THIS IS A BLACK PERSON. SriLankans/Indians are BLACK. U guys keep for getting that black is not something we share as an ethnicity it’s something we share as a GLOBAL STRUGGLE. Everything/Everyone that is on the opposite side of the Aryan/Christian/Zionist world supremacy agenda has been marked as BLACK. And has been marked FOR DEATH. This includes, Africans, Indians, African Americans, Arabs, Muslims, south East Asians, aboriginal people, ETC. you motherf-ckers DONT GET IT. m.I.a is trying to explain this deeply complex idea to you all with examples of current events but the LIBERAL MEDIA has its d-ck so far down you sheeples throats that you can’t even understand what she’s saying. SHES TELLING YOU THAT HER PEOPLE ARE SUFFERING JUST AS OURS ARE. LEAVE MAYA THE F-CK ALONE AND LET HER DO HER PERFORMANCE. FOR F-CKS SAKE
M.I.A. has not officially pulled out of the festival as of yet, and there has been no response from founder Matthew Morgan.
