The long-running Southern rock cult heroes Drive-By Truckers have always had a lot to say about Southern identity, and various differing ideas about Southern identity have been causing our country some serious problems lately. Today, the band announced a new album called American Band, which follows up 2014’s English Oceans and which will arrive this fall and which will touch on some recent issues like the massacres in South Carolina and Oregon and the history of the NRA. Co-leader Mike Cooley wrote the bracing, folky lead single “Surrender Under Protest” about the fight to remove the Confederate battle flag from the South Carolina Statehouse.
