The 5 Best Videos Of The Week
This week, Aphex Twin unveiled his first music video since the ’90s. Back then, he was working with genius directors like Chris Cunningham to create surreal nightmare worlds. This time, he recruited a very different director: A 12-year-old kid from Dublin. You’re never going to believe this, but Aphex videos were a whole lot better when Aphex was working with professional visionaries, rather than children. So the new Aphex video is not on this week’s list. But you can see which videos did make it below.
5. Japanese Breakfast – “Jane Cum” (Dir. Adam Kolodny)
A Stereogum staffer is one of the stars of this video. She picked a good video to star in.
4. The Veils – “Axolotl” (Dir. Tu Neill)
I don’t know if this is even remotely right, but my read on this video is that all these icons of American ignorance and aggression are being destroyed by the thing they sought to destroy. That’s a pretty poignant thing right now!
3. Dinosaur Jr. – “Tiny” (Dir. Laurie Collyer)
I am an easy mark for some things, and one of those things is a skateboarding dog. If a skateboarding dog stars in your video, your video is an automatic top-five lock.
2. The So So Glos – “Dancing Industry” (Dir. Charlie Ahearn)
Ahearn is the man who made the classic 1983 hip-hop movie Wild Style, and it does my heart good to see that he can still bring that same level of energy and excitement to a guerrilla punk rock video about subway breakdancers.
1. Clams Casino – “All Nite” (Feat. Vince Staples) (Dir. Ryan Staake)
I can’t imagine how much work went into editing this video — all to create this all-new off-kilter feeling that I’ve never felt while watching a music video. It’s a new thing, and I don’t know if it can be repeated.
