Kehlani – “CRZY”
R&B singer Kehlani attempted suicide less than two months ago, and while assholes will be assholes, most artists responded with love, support, and empathy. It seems she has recovered well, and has come back strong, asserting her newfound strength and resolve on the uplifting “CRZY.”
With her “That which does not kill us only makes us stronger” tattoo prominently displayed on the single artwork, she’s released a vow of inner conviction and confrontational defiance against those who wish to knock her down. She comes out on the offensive right from the outset, singing, “Everything I do, I do it with a passion/ If I gotta be a bitch, I’ma be a bad one” along with references to Allen Iverson’s unyielding confidence and refusal to conform during his tenure in the NBA. She embraces the stereotypical, much-overused label of women as being emotional, imbalanced creatures incapable of checking their feelings. The synth-soaked, heavily percussive beat further emboldens her audacity. Listen.
