Questlove Rips Into Bill O’Reilly For Defending Slavery
Bill O’Reilly is probably the proto-troll. He says some crazy shit on the regular, so it’s easy to brush it off as an “old man yells at cloud” situation. But some things you can’t just let roll off your shoulders, like when you’re black and folks want to belittle just how vile slavery was. O’Reilly did just that in response to Michelle Obama’s moving speech at the DNC this past Monday. In one of many potent moments, she said: “I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves, and I watch my daughters, two beautiful, intelligent, black young women, playing with their dogs on the White House lawn.” The Fox News pundit responded by saying “slaves that worked there were well fed and had decent lodgings.” Wow, you’re right Bill, what humane inhumanity. FOH!
Amid much outrage on social media, one of the most astute and resonant statements came from drummer, hip-hop legend, and overall music aficionado Questlove. He took to Instagram to post a picture of a slave with protruding lash marks and point out why O’Reilly’s comment was so fucked on so many levels. He threw some of the smartest, sharpest, soul-piercing, personal daggers that have passed in front of eyes in a long time. Sample venom: “I dunno if that man’s (never say his name) point is to troll at any cost whatsoever but his entire existence is 5 steps backwards for any progress made in humanity.” Yeesh, well said.
