ATLien wunderkind Raury spread himself a little thin on the very ambitious All We Need last year. It felt disjointed in many spots because he was trying too hard to combine so many genres and influences and to sing, rap, and sing-song rap over all of them. But since the album, he’s come with a string of one-offs and features that hint at him making a nest out of the various sounds and settling in.

Case in point: “Like A Star” finds Raury singing for the first half over a cosmic, nebulous, horn-laced beat from the Social Experiment leader Donnie Trumpet. The second half has him rapping, and though singing Raury is better than rapping Raury, the latter skill set is improving. As Trumpet scales back the beat, Raury switches cadences a couple times without the transitions feeling forced. And the verses about the wayward ways of young women trying to find themselves are solid. Overall, it’s a smooth joint to zone out to. Listen.
