Tegan And Sara dropped their excellent album Love You To Death earlier this summer. Shortly after they released the album, we learned they had a song on The Intervention OST. The film, which stars Clea DuVall, Natasha Lyonne, and Jason Ritter among others, is out this Friday, and today we get to hear the full version of “Fade Out” via Rolling Stone. It sounds a lot like the music on Tegan And Sara’s new album with a touch more density and lushness for a more cinematic feel. And while it isn’t quite “Everything Is AWESOME!!!” — maybe the best soundtrack anthem ever — it’s still stellar.

Here’s what Sara had to say about the song:

I played a rough idea of it for Clea [DuVall] and she really liked it. So I tried to imagine Melanie Lynskey’s character and the misguided attempt to fix other people’s lives when she herself was headed for a fadeout in her own relationship and rewrote the lyrics.

And here’s what DuVall thinks of the song:

“Fade Out” captures the emotional complexity of the film. I love the duality of the dreamy melody with the somewhat bittersweet lyrics. When Sara first played me the finished song, all of my anxiety disappeared. The more I hear it, the more I fall in love with it.

DuVall was instrumental in the soundtrack and score for the film. In addition to putting together the outtakes below for the music video, she is the one who tapped Tegan And Sara to write a song for a film, and she also asked them to contribute to the score. She mentioned she did so because Tegan And Sara hadn’t worked on a film score before and she wanted something that deviated from any of the scores she had heard before.
