Beyoncé has taken almost every opportunity afforded her to speak against police violence. Whether it’s a direct statement like her response to the killings of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, imagery, interviews, several performances, or her music.

Her outspokenness has received criticism from police unions and supporters of police departments across the country despite her clarification that she is not against police, she is against police brutality, and her tribute to the fallen cops after the Dallas shooting. Police even protested her Formation tour stop in Houston.

Her latest detractor is former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who also slammed her Super Bowl performance of “Formation.” As a guest on Fux Fox News’ show Fox & Friends, he had a lot to say about Beyoncé’s VMAs performance in which she made another bold statement against police violence. Host Ainsley Earhardt wanted to ask Guiliani about the “war on cops” (lopsided “war” if you ask me) and played an excerpt of Bey’s performance. The former mayor watched about five seconds of a clip after putting on his glasses and said, “You’re asking the wrong person because I had five uncles who were police officers, two cousins who were, and one who died in the line of duty. I ran the biggest and best police department in the world, the New York City Police Department, and I saved more black lives than any of those people you see on stage by reducing crime, and especially homicide, by 75%.”

He went on to talk about more policies he’d implemented during his tenure as mayor and how much he did for black NYC neighborhoods. I would go into further detail, but he lost me at “I saved more black lives.” Watch Guiliani’s interview segment in its entirety below.
