Before I get into this week’s picks, I just want to take a moment for one video that only just missed teh cutoff: DJ Khaled’s “Nas Album Done.” “Nas Album Done” is a fucking ridiculous video in all sorts of ways that I support. For instance: There’s a shot where Khaled rides a horse through the ocean while wearing an unbuttoned silk shirt and smoking a cigar. That’s great. That’s exactly the type of thing I want to see in rap videos. Budget permitting — which is a big hurdle these days — I’d love for more rappers to fly to the Caribbean to shoot videos, and I’d love even more for those videos to feature actors who played minor parts in the movie Belly. So “Nas Album Done” is on the right track. But at the last moment, I bumped it for a rap video that was just a little more eerie, ominous, and atmospheric. These things happen. This week’s picks are below.

5. Isaiah Rashad – “Park” (Dir. APLUS)

Nothing happens in this video, exactly; it’s just people driving around and smoking. And yet the film-reversal effects, the smoky cinematography, and the floating tension make it look like a fucking nightmare — a fun nightmare, but still a nightmare.

4. ANOHNI – “Crisis” (Dir. ?)

Weirdly, the “Nothing Compares 2 U” model isn’t as effective when it addresses actual apocalypse as it is when it addresses personal apocalypse. It’s still effective, though.

3. Beck – “Wow” (Dir. Beck & Grady Hall)

Look at this goofy motherfucker.

2. GTA – “Little Bit Of This” (Feat. Vince Staples) (Dir. David Helman)

How is it that every video as great as long as Vince Staples is in it? Even if it’s not, strictly speaking, Vince Staples’ video? What kind of music-video voodoo power does he possess?

1. High On Fire – “The Black Plot” (NSFW-ish) (Dir. Skinner & Hey Beautiful Jerk)

An intergalactic cartoon epic with an involved storyline that can be pretty much summed up thus: Metal things happen.
