Leonard Cohen – “You Want It Darker”
Today, Leonard Cohen, the grand old poet of rock, turns 83. And Cohen has chosen today to share “You Want It Darker,” the title track of the new album that he’ll release next month. A bit of the song played during a scene from the most recent season of the British crime drama Peaky Blinders, but we get to hear the whole thing today. It’s a beautifully heavy reverie with a rough, whispery, charismatic vocal from Cohen. He recorded it with backing from Montreal’s Cantor Gideon Zelermyer and the Shaar Hashomayim Synagogue Choir, and that sound, along with Cohen’s voice and his words, feels like an invocation of something old and mystical. Listen to the song below.
You Want It Darker is out 10/21 on Columbia.
