Watch Rick Rubin Interview Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick Lamar is on the cover of the new issue of GQ Style, and for its accompanying story the magazine had the rapper sit down with super-producer Rick Rubin. It was apparently the first time the two of them had met, and GQ says they went into the studio immediately after talking at Rubin’s Shangri La studios in Malibu. During their conversation, they discussed the transition between his earlier work and To Pimp A Butterfly, how much the audience factors into the creative process (not a lot: “For me to actually feel an idea, it has to come from me.”), and “Alright,” which Rubin says “has become our generation’s protest song.” Lamar also says that he could envision making an album down the line where he doesn’t rap: “Yeah, I think I got the confidence for it. If I can master the idea and make the time to approach it the right way, I think I can push it out.” You can read the full story here.
GQ Style also made a 50-minute-long video of their conversation. Watch that below.
