Foxing – “White Flag” (Dido Cover)
Foxing have shared a cover of Dido’s “White Flag.” It was originally meant as a way to recoup the losses from their horrific van accident last week and, while the first portion of the proceeds from the purchase of the track will help them recover from that, the rest will be donated 50/50 to Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union, two organizations that severely need your help now as we enter this dangerous new era. Listen to the cover and read a statement from Foxing below, and please pay what you can for the track here.
This was supposed to be a completely different post.
It was a statement about our van accident last week and the subsequent financial hit we took. It was a statement about a song we put together and new merchandise for sale in an attempt to recover. It was finalized several days ago and was completely ready to go out to the world; however, waking up this morning everything written felt wrong and vastly unimportant. Our financial troubles feel rightfully eclipsed by something larger; something that needs to not only be talked about with a sense of urgency and expediency. It’s been a hard week for us personally. It’s been a hard day for our country. It’s almost impossible to fully address what happened last night. Honestly, right now everything said would be reactionary and perhaps not in good taste. For now we’ll bite off what we can chew:
As most of you probably know by now, a week ago we were in a pretty rough van accident. The amount of love sent our way helped keep our heads up as we were forced to pick up the pieces and try to continue the tour. In the days following the crash a flood of people contacted us asking what they could do to help.So we pulled ourselves together and made a cover version of Dido’s “White Flag”. In the past 24 hours this song has taken new meaning in our hearts. On the surface it is a pop song about love and yada yada, but right now, for us, “White Flag” is about refusing to give up; it’s about overcoming and fighting until the last breath. It is a song about hope. Initially all of the money was going to solely go towards our recovery and then the rest was to be divided up amongst ourselves. Not anymore. While the first portion of proceeds from this song will still go towards recouping our damages, everything else will be donated 50/50 to Planned Parenthood and the ACLU—two organizations that will believe will need support in the days to come. If you have a preference as to which of the two your donation will go to, please notate it in the box at the time of purchase.
We want to make this promise to you: If you are female, a person of color, a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, a member of the Muslim community, an immigrant in this country, or any other person who has been marginalized or made to feel like you are anything less than human due to the outcome of this election, or the long and painful list of practices and beliefs this country has inflicted upon you time and time again—we will stand with you in whatever way we can. We will fight with you in any way you ask of us. We know that we are just a band, and in the grand scheme of things our reach is very limited, but this has to start on the ground level and it has to start now. There is no time to live in defeat; the other side is not waiting for us to organize.
Our country has a sickness, it is a deep-seeded and long living sickness; it has been with us since before we had a name. The cure for that sickness is a unified voice. In the coming days, months, and years, please allow us to be part of that voice.
Be well,
