A Tribe Called Quest have dropped We Got It From Here…Thank You 4 Your Service, their sixth studio album and first in 18 years. This right here is how a legacy act should update.
There are plenty of nods to the Tribe of old: Phife Dawg (R.I.P.) sounding great employing different flows and his classic Caribbean-tinged Queens accent, Busta Rhymes with some vintage rambunctiousness and his own tropical vibes, Consequence with his classic flow, and Q-Tip sounding smooth as ever on the production and vocal tips. But everyone sounds so youthful and invigorated, incorporating some new cadences, snapping back to their original flows, and hitting many in between. With all of that going on, the rhymes are just tight with very little filler.
Then you’ve got Andre 3000, Kanye West, the ever ascendant Anderson .Paak, and a much more vocal Jarobi White to add some freshness as well, but there is even more innovation in the sound. It’s a far flung collection of songs with reggae, jazz, proto rock ‘n’ roll, boom bap, synth-work, punk fuzz, and so many other sonics trading off to keep the ear guessing. This album is supremely good.
The Love Movement is no longer the album ATCQ went out on, and the Tribe couldn’t have come back any better. Stream it below.
