The Avalanches are back with their first track since dropping Wildflower, their first album in 16 years, this past July. The track is a “rough mix” of a “Christmas jam” called “Bad Day,” and they’ve tapped Indiana rapper Freddie Gibbs to flow over a glitchy, soulful beat that samples Stevie Wonder’s “For Once In My Life” and Shuggie Otis’ “Strawberry Letter 23.” Gibbs interpolates lyrics from the Notorious B.I.G.’s “Juicy” as he dispenses some smooth lifestyle raps weaving in and out the samples. There’s an eclectic mix of inspirations and sources, but it comes together nicely. Check it out.
