Holy Motors – “Sleepryder”
Holy Motors make oozing psychedelic rock that hits like a dream despite undoubtedly seeking to soundtrack nightmares. Case in point: “Sleepryder,” a foreboding slow-burner that keeps threatening to break into a sprint before defecting back to its measured drip, filled with chilling little details like, “Sometimes when you are sleeping/ I take you for a ride.” Yet even with all the dimly-lit reverb and joyless vocal melodies, Holy Motors still can’t help but sound enchanting, thanks in part to spacious production and a hypnotically lackadaisical guitar line. “Sleepryder” comes from an upcoming 7″ out later this month, accompanied by the equally spell-binding “Descending,” and is a prime example of the blissfully brooding dark arts this band is capable of performing. Sleepryder b/w Descending is out 2/27 via Wharf Cat Records.
