The propelling blunder of Jay Som’s latest, “1 Billion Dogs,” is pleasantly dizzying. 22-year-old singer-songwriter Melina Duterte’s vocals are ashy and veiled, speaking of a perplexing scenario: “I forget just like a kid/ Can’t see straight/ I’m tired and I’m alone.” Her words are melancholic against the cushioned distortion and bouncing drumbeat. As the song comes to its final minute, it self-destructs for a moment before snapping back to the track’s melody like one of those dancing inflatable men you see on the street by car dealerships. Jay Som is releasing her debut album, Everbody Works, in March, and a few weeks back we heard lead single “The Bus Song.” Listen to the new one below.
