Forest Swords – “The Highest Flood”

It's been nearly four years since Matthew Barnes, the UK producer who records as Forest Swords, released Engravings, a truly great album of dark, enveloping atmospheric music. Since then, he's been oddly quiet. But today, Barnes returns with a new single called "The Highest Flood." As with much of what Barnes does, it's basically an instrumental, and it doesn't fit into any easily-identifiable genre. Instead, it recalls all sorts of heavy things: '70s horror-movie scores, Massive Attack, the furthest-out sounds of the '80s goth scene. It's a very cool piece of music, and you can hear it below.

"The Highest Flood" is out now on Ninja Tune.
