Sam Amidon – “Juma Mountain”
The experimental folk musician has built his career by covering and reshaping old songs, usually folk-music traditionals. But on his new album The Following Mountain, Amidon has put together a set of completely new songs, though he did take some of the lyrics from old songs. Amidon and collaborators Leo Abrahams and Shahzad Ismaily worked on the follow-up to 2014’s Lily-O with a few veteran musicians like ’60s free jazz drummer Milford Graves and Hendrix percussionist Juma Sultan. First single “Juma Mountain” is warm and comforting but also spacey and unmoored, and it’s a very promising first taste of an album that could turn out to be something special. Below, listen to “Juma Mountain” and check out the album’s tracklist.
The Following Mountain is out 5/19 on Nonesuch.
