Ryan Pollie’s second album as Los Angeles Police Department is more expansive and ambitious than the unassuming debut that led us to name him a Band To Watch, but the same sense of melody and knack for warm pop hooks threads itself through the 10 tracks of his sophomore album, as evidenced by early singles “Grown,” “If I Lied,” and “The Plane 2.” LAPD2 was produced by Foxygen’s Jonathan Rado, who puts Pollie’s lush but minimal arrangements at the forefront as the LA-based songwriter sings with a certain despondent soulfulness that feels vulnerable and comforting.
