Gorillaz Are “Already Talking About The Next Album”
Gorillaz just came out with their new album Humanz, their first in seven years. Gorillaz tend to take long, long breaks between albums, but there’s at least a chance that they’ll have something new for us before we are all old and grey. Speaking with the UK’s Channel 4 recently, Gorillaz masterminds Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlitt claimed that they’d already had the germ of an idea for a new LP.
Responding to a question about the long between-albums stretches, Albarn said:
It’s served us well having these big gaps [between albums] because, in the interim, the technology does move forward. And the whole thing about Gorillaz is that cutting edge between music and technology. That’s driven the whole thing and made it different.
And Hewlitt built on what he was saying with this:
There has to be a gap between the albums because they’re quite exhausting. They take a lot of work. But we’re already talking about the next album, so there might not be a gap this time… It starts with one idea. Like, there’s a conversation one night, you have one idea a sentence, and that is the basis for a whole album. And then we never talk again until it’s finished. And we had that one idea again the other night. So we have to get started on the next one.
When Albarn looked vaguely horrified at that idea, Hewlitt patted his shoulder and said, “Not today. Maybe tomorrow.” And when Channel 4’s interviewer tried to ask them what the idea was, Albarn, looking uncomfortable, played it off with a joke about bodysuits. The whole thing happens around the 25-minute mark of this video:
So maybe don’t hold your breath for that next one, but maybe it’ll only be a few years this time.
