Rihanna, Lupita Nyong’o Will Co-Star In A Movie Inspired By A Tweet
Just last month, a photo of Rihanna and Lupita Nyong’o sitting next to each other at a 2014 fashion show made the rounds accompanied by a bunch of jokes about the two of them starring in a buddy comedy movie together. Slowly, the pieces fell into place to make that dream a reality. Lupita responded, then Rihanna, and then director Ava DuVernay got involved and so did writer Issa Rae. It all seemed kind of like a joke until it wasn’t.

Today EW confirms that a movie starring Rihanna and Nyong’o, directed by DuVernay, and written by Rae is actually happening. It was the foundation for a huge negotiation session at Cannes for the rights, and Netflix eventually became the top bidder. The film will debut on the streaming service sometime in the future.
DuVernay is currently wrapping up post-production on A Wrinkle In Time and Rae’s Insecure starts its second season at HBO next month, but apparently she’s already working on a script and the studio is looking to begin production next year.
