Flying Lotus Apologizes For Defending The Gaslamp Killer Against Rape Allegations
Last week, Los Angeles producer the Gaslamp Killer was accused of drugging and raping two women in 2013. The Gaslamp Killer comes from the same bass-music scene as Flying Lotus, and FlyLo’s Brainfeeder label has released some of the Gaslamp Killer’s music. And while Brainfeeder put out a statement distancing itself from the Gaslamp Killer, Flying Lotus himself finished a Los Angeles show by playing one of the Gaslamp Killer’s tracks and making statements that appeared to support the man: “The internet is a fucking liar. Ain’t nobody judge and jury but the fucking law, OK?…Thank you guys so much for coming, let truth and justice have its day.”
Speaking to HipHopDX, Flying Lotus says that the video circulated online was taken out of context: “There was a lot longer of a speech. It would be awesome to show the whole video. I came at it from a humble place.”
And speaking to the same website, Flying Lotus has also offered a longer apology for those comments:
I wanted to sincerely apologize for my comments at my show. I realize they were insensitive. This is a tough time for all of us, as men and women. I’m having trouble finding my voice in all of this. I am truly heartbroken. My stage has always been a place for what’s in my heart until now. I feel as internet-wielding people, we have to learn to give each other space to feel, to honor each other’s reactions and experiences without bullying. I care about this community and its impact so much.
