We praised Nashville-based Lionlimb last year for their nostalgic psych-pop debut, Shoo, and now the team of current and former Angel Olsen bandmates is back with a second album on Dustin Payesur’s Bayonet imprint. It’s called Tape Recorder, and its lead single arrives today with an accompanying video directed by Alex O. Eaton and Lionlimb’s Stewart Bronaugh. Suitably backed by grainy black-and-white images, “Maria” deepens the melancholic Elliott Smith influence heard on their last record. The track transitions, almost unnoticeably, from light and dreamy to dark and layered, making it a rewarding six minutes. Bronaugh shared some background:

“Maria” addresses Maria Goretti, one of the youngest saints to be canonized. Beyond that it’s about feeling a part of something bigger than yourself. It could be a connection you have to someone you’ll never meet. Or, appreciating what another person is going through even if you’ll never fully understand it. We all have certain experiences in common, more or less, and music is a universal tool that reflects that. You don’t need any prior skills or knowledge in order to engage with it.
