Indie Rockers Go Classic Rock For Pat Spurgeon

Saturday night at The Independent in San Francisco, Rogue Wave hosted a benefit to raise money for drummer Pat Spurgeon's medical bills (he is in need of a kidney transplant). Stereogum was lucky enough to meet Pat when the band played our South By Southwest showcase in March; we had no idea, however, that he was born with one kidney and would be on dialysis just weeks later. (A transplant in '93 served him well until now).

The weekend event included performances by Rogue Wave, Ben Gibbard, Matthew Caws (Nada Surf), Ryan Miller (Guster), John Vanderslice, and special guests. Lemony Snickett (Daniel Handler) MC?d.

Permutations of indie all-star crew rocked out on a handful of classic rock covers, including tunes by the Monkees, Graham Nash, the Beatles, Nirvana, Elvis Costello, and the Who.

Here's the whole gang performing "(What?s So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, And Understanding):
