New Devendra Banhart – “Lindo Cihuatlán” (Stereogum Premiere)

We heard new live Devendra Banhart last week. Today we can offer the recorded variety, though it's not from his next record: "Lindo Cihuatlán" shows up on the soundtrack for Rudo y Cursi, the flick that reunites Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna for the first time since Y Tu Mamá También. They play two brothers working as laborers in rural Mexico...

[U]ntil one day a scout spies their friendly game of soccer and sign them on as star athletes for rival teams. They quickly learn that the high life of top players-fame, money, and beautiful women-has a dark side....

Whoa. Banhart's take on"Lindo Cihuatlá" is hushed, spare, sad, and quite beautiful and spooky, even if you don't speak Spanish. It's one of those moments you're reminded that behind the class-clown persona, the guy does have talent. The film's soundtrack offers an interesting mixed bag -- folks like Juana Molina and the Black Lips tackling Mexican standards, etc. -- so take a look at the track list, too.
