New Graham Coxon Video – “In The Morning”

Graham Coxon had a tough go when we caught him at SXSW. Last week's triumphant Blur reunion reminded me why on one level it likely didn't keep him awake at night. The guy is human, though, and the distracted crowd's nonstop blabbing, did make him sweat and blush (or fume?). It was hard to concentrate, but I do remember "In The Morning" and its bluesy guitar and blackbird-referencing lyrics: "If a diamond hangs in every tree / And a life is lost for every leaf/ Can a bird still sing? / I listened just this morning / This is what I heard / An angel's wings in cool night air, / like a blackbird in the chapel / A starling in the moonlight fair, / wings beating up a gale," etc. Chris Hopewell's gorgeous, impressionistic video does a great job of teasing out that naturalism, providing the track with a lush, misty, psychedelic, and leafy backdrop, i.e. a much more fitting landscape than an early afternoon at a sodden Fader Fort.
