Azealia Banks - BBD

When you approach Azealia Banks’s first offering of 2013, “BBD,” it has the same hydraulics that you expect from her — dance music trends on hyperdrive, with ruminations on how she feels just that much better than everyone else. The thing that made her famous was a mouthful of vitriol — labyrinthine wordplay that endeared us all with “212” but eventually became exhausting for some when she continued to cram too many words into the expected coherent 16 bars. But when it came time to stand up to fellow Harlemite Jim Jones, she started enunciating and hasn’t looked back since. This isn’t the most impressive of her lyrical output, but any New Jack Swing nostalgic will love the references to New Edition and Bell Biv Devoe’s “Poison,” the song’s namesake. Banks plans to release her debut full-length, Broke With Expensive Taste some time this year with a lead single called “Miss Amor.” For now, check out the Apple Juice Kid and Sup Doodle produced one-off, “BBD” below.
