The Music Of Prince (Feat. D’Angelo, Elvis Costello, Fred Armisen, & More) @ Carnegie Hall, NYC 3/7/13
Last night, a motley crew of stage and screen stars paid tribute to newly resurgent pop legend Prince at NYC’s Carnegie Hall. Among the performers: D’Angelo, the Waterboys, Elvis Costello, Chris Rock, Maya Rudolph, Talib Kweli, Sandra Bernhard, Nina Persson (the Cardigans), the Blind Boys Of Alabama, Betty Lavette, and Fred Armisen, who has impersonated the Purple One on SNL for almost a decade. The Roots were the backing band all night, and $100,000 was raised for music education charities. LaVette covered “Kiss,” Waterboys did “Purple Rain,” D’Angelo sung “It’s Going To Be A Beautiful Night,” Roots collaborator Costello did “Moonbeam Levels,” and Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum (who do Prince covers as PRINCEss) performed “Darling Nikki.” They all joined forces to end the night with “1999.” Check out photos above and two shorts clip of D’Angelo and company below.
Also, here’s some footage from the rehearsals that took place at City Winery earlier in the week:
