Twitter Launches #Music App
Twitter has launched #music, a new app to aid in music discovery. The service functions in the same way as Trending Topics, only with an audio component. The main or “Popular” page will give you a list of which songs are being tweeted about most at the time. You can also get a list of emerging artists — the No. 1 spot on that chart is currently being held down by the Appleseed Cast, whose debut album was released in 1998 — and suggestions tailored to your follow list, as well as what people you follow are #nowplaying. #music will run both on the web browser version of Twitter, as well as in the iOS apps. Read more about the service below.
It also brings artists’ music-related Twitter activity front and center: go to their profiles to see which music artists they follow and listen to songs by those artists. And, of course, you can tweet songs right from the app.
The songs on Twitter #music currently come from three sources: iTunes, Spotify or Rdio. By default, you will hear previews from iTunes when exploring music in the app. Subscribers to Rdio and Spotify can log in to their accounts to enjoy full tracks that are available in those respective catalogs. We will continue to explore and add other music service providers.
