Charlotte Gainsbourg – “Hey Joe” (Prod. Beck)
Controversial director Lars von Trier and indie darling actress/singer Charlotte Gainsbourg have one of the creepier director/actress relationships; they teamed up for the apocalyptic Melancholia and next year’s hypersexed Nymphomaniac. For the latter, Gainsbourg has recorded a cover of the rock standard “Hey Joe” (popularized by the Jimi Hendrix Experience on their landmark debut Are You Experienced) with production by Beck. It’s a breathy, hauntingly ominous take that nonetheless retains the song’s bluesy swagger, and you can definitely hear the Beck in those bass parts and choral flourishes. Listen below.

Nymphomaniac will be released in two parts in the U.S. on 3/21 and 4/18. The “Hey Joe” recording gets digital release 12/16 via Because/Elektra.
