SAINT PEPSI – “Mr. Wonderful”
Last month I named SAINT PEPSI’s “Call Me Maybe” remix one of my 10 favorite songs of 2013. It didn’t occur to me then, but that article went up only about one year after Ryan DeRobertis began the project. Right in time for that one-year mark, today SiriusXMU premiered the new single off SAINT PEPSI’s upcoming album Gin City and it showed up #2 on the show, wedged between a new Ryan Hemsworth remix and “Bipp” by Sophie, one of the most celebrated and beloved electronic tracks of last year. That right there is such an achievement in such a short time, but it’s deserved. Give a listen to “Mr. Wonderful” and it’ll come as no surprise that DeRobertis has become such a rising star. Constructed out of woozy synth blemishes, snapping drums, and Aretha Franklin’s “Wonderful,” which joins Carly Rae Jepsen, Ray J, and emo-legends American Football on DeRobertis’ list of brilliant leftfield sample choices. It’s jokingly tagged as “Mario Kart Dream Trap,” but honestly that’s not a bad way to get across how lovely this thing is. Listen below.
Gin City, which is self-released, will be coming soon. Check his Bandcamp for more details.
