Three years after releasing their art-rap opus Black Up, Seattle duo Shabazz Palaces are no closer to announcing a follow-up album. But the two members of Shabazz Palaces — rapper Palaceer Lazaro, better known as Digable Planets member Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler, and multi-instrumentalist Baba Maraire — have joined up with Hussein Kalonji to form a new trio called Chimurenga Renaissance. Their debut album riZe vadZimu riZe is coming next month, and first single “The B.A.D. Is Good” is a trapped-in-the-system lament that adds a reggae edge to Shabazz Palaces’ disoriented take on rap.
