At an estate sale, a Motown collector and former staffer at Detroit’s Motown Museum bought a pile of records from the family of a musician who had just died. One of those records had something unexpected in it: A passport issued to a 25-year-old Marvin Gaye in 1964, early in his career. While that passport might not give us too many clues into Gaye’s inner life, it is definitive proof that he took a good ID photo. On the most recent episode of PBS’s Antiques Roadshow, Laura Woolley appraised the passport as being worth $20,000. Check out the video below.

Here’s my issue with the whole thing: Does this guy owe anything — if not legally, maybe ethically — to the dead musician’s family? I honestly do not know.
