The 5 Best Videos Of The Week
There were lots of good videos this week, but I didn’t like any of them as much as I hated Jerry James’s video for “Lana Del Rey.” I hated that one so much that I enjoyed hating it. I hated it so much it gave me wings. I hated it so much that I actually felt more alive when it was playing. I did not, however, hate it so much that I came to love it. I just stayed hating it. Some videos that I emphatically did not hate are below.
5. Little Dragon – “Klapp Klapp” (Dir. Taylor Cohen)
The final visual punchline is a bit obvious, and I feel a bit bad for including this one over Katy Perry’s genuinely batshit big-budget put-the-Juicy-in-a-sarcophagus video for “Dark Horse.” But that is one hell of a central performance.
4. The Afghan Whigs – “Algiers” (Dir. Phil Harder)
At this point, someone should really cast Greg Dulli as a racist Southern sheriff. Until then, I will happily accept him swaggering into town, drunkenly swaggering out, and enraging all the cowboys with his swaggering asshole charisma. I feel like a lot of early-’90s Afghan Whigs tour stops probably looked something like this.
3. S. Carey – “Fire-scene” (Dir. Joe Baughman)
When the entire world is slapping you over the head with absurd and overwhelming beauty, you don’t really need narrative, do you?
2. Forest Swords – “The Weight Of Gold” (Dir. Joe Baughman)
I really like the way he raps, but it’s nice to see Lakutis branching out into other forms of expression, as well.
1. Pussy Riot – “Putin Will Teach You How To Love” (Dir. Pussy Riot)
Cossacks are such dicks. (If you want to plunge headlong into depression laced with geopolitical confusion, enjoy the YouTube comments here.)
