Over the past year or so, James Blake has threatened to take over the Coldplay Memorial Spot as every rapper’s favorite non-rap artist. In an interview last year, Kanye West referred to Blake as “Kanye’s favorite artist” (he used the third person), and we may soon get to hear what happens with the two get into a studio together.

Blake tells Rolling Stone that Kanye has reached out to Blake to collaborate, and Blake also says he’s interested, with one caveat: He wants them to be in the same space at the same time. Blake says, “You know, the way that I like to work is bare bones and personal. I think because Kanye’s such an accomplished producer, if I was to work with him, then I think we could do something together, and just together, you know?” Given the Hawaiian and Parisian recording sessions that produced his last two albums, Kanye seems to like to work the same way.

Given what Kanye has done with Justin Vernon in the past, a Blake/Kanye collab could be truly great. But it seems unlikely that it’ll turn up on the next Kanye album, which Kanye says will be the Born In The U.S.A. to Yeezus’s Nebraska. Blake says, “If he wants it to sound like Born in the U.S.A., then I’m not sure if I’m the one to ask. Honestly, I spend so much fucking time talking about Kanye West and Chance [The Rapper] and Drake. People ask me so much about it, but really up until this point, I haven’t had any time to act on any impulse, so all I can say is we’ll see and watch this space but there’s things coming. I’m really excited. My monotonous tone of voice won’t show you that, but I’m excited.”
