Carrie Brownstein Cast In Todd Haynes’ Carol
It’s a bit painful for old fans to realize this, but Carrie Brownstein is probably more famous for her work on Portlandia than she ever was for Sleater-Kinney. And now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Brownstein is beefing up the “actor” side of her resume with her first-ever dramatic role, in the forthcoming Todd Haynes film Carol. The movie is an adaptation of the 1952 Patricia Highsmith novel The Price Of Salt. It tells the story of one woman who, while working at a department store mid-20th-century New York, develops an obsession with another woman. The cast includes heavyweights like Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett, Kyle Chandler, and Sarah Paulson. Brownstein will play a character named Genevieve Cantrell, and she will have “an encounter” with Mara’s character. Haynes’s filmography, it’s worth pointing out, is uncommonly musical; he made Velvet Goldmine, I’m Not There, and the rare and sought-after Barbie-doll drama Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story. Carol is filming now.
