The 5 Best Videos Of The Week

straight2video

Right now, our busiest comments section is a heated debate over whether a white lady is racist for dancing with black men in her music video and then being defensive about it. That is how indie rock, and every other form of media, works in 2014. You get used to it, I guess. Here’s what might be getting lost in that conversation: Sky Ferreira made a very fun and ridiculous video for a great song. That video is below, as are four other good ones.

5. OFF! – “Red White And Black” (Dir. The Admiral)

Race war is a whole lot more fun when it’s a cartoony barfight with at least one News Radio cast member running away with his pants down.

4. Atmosphere – “Kanye West” (Dir. Pete Lee)

I don’t know when Hollywood stopped making violently romantic crime movies about couples on robbery sprees, but at least we get this one. Somehow, that mustache makes Slug much more believable as a seedy convenience-store clerk with a pistol taped up under his shelf.

3. Tyga – “Senile” (Feat. Lil Wayne & Nicki Minaj) (Dir. Colin Tilley)

What happens when that Odd Future aesthetic bleeds through to actual big-money rap videos, with actual talented directors involved. I’d just like to point out that nobody has accused Nicki Minaj of using those shirtless tatted-up Latino dudes as props, even though she totally is.

2. Sky Ferreira – “I Blame Myself” (Dir. Grant Singer)

I’m not sure I buy the idea that this was just supposed to be a fun, silly video, made without any sense of provocation. But there’s a real sense of fun here that, for me, overwhelms everything else. Ferreira and Singer are going for it, and getting away with it.

1. Real Estate – “Crime” (Dir. Tom Scharpling)

Scharpling has made funnier music videos, and videos that work better as straight-up music videos. But this one might still be, on a purely conceptual level, his masterpiece. He’s crammed in all these absurd and divergent ideas, found ways to make them flow together, and made a big meta joke out of the whole thing, while at the same time being funny and working as a music video. Just incredible work.
