Naomi Punk – “Television Man”
Back when I wrote my cheap SXSW diary last year, one of the performances that stood out most was by Olympia experimentalists Naomi Punk, whom I described as “adept at writing jaggedly unusual riffs and repeating them manically until the tension breaks.” The band just announced a sophomore LP called Television Man and unveiled its title track, which matches my previous description pretty well. Some of the aforementioned intensity has been traded here for studio polish and pop panache, but I have to imagine this song absolutely crushes in a live setting. That’s not meant to disparage the studio version, which is sneaky-catchy and anthemic in its own right. Give it a spin below.
Television Man is out 8/5 on Captured Tracks.
