The spaced-out production guru Flying Lotus has lined up some big names to guest on his forthcoming album You’re Dead!, and we’ve already heard what happens when Herbie Hancock jumps on a track with him and Thundercat. But the most immediately intriguing track on the You’re Dead! tracklist was always “Never Catch Me,” which unites FlyLo with Kendrick Lamar, the young king of his hometown’s rap world. “Never Catch Me” recently debuted on L.A. radio, and it’s a lush, dizzy, heady track. It stops just short of using Kendrick as just another element in a busy, cluttered mix. FlyLo, it turns out, uses Kendrick in much the same way he uses Thundercat: Just another virtuoso, there to help him put together his universe of sound. Hear “Never Catch Me” below.
