Shut Up, Dude: This Week’s Best And Worst Comments
There’s a great movie out called The Skeleton Twins. It stars Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig as suicidal siblings, but it’s much funnier than that sounds. When I saw a test screening last year, the most memorable scene (and all anyone wanted to talk about after) was the main characters’ skillful lip-sync to Starship’s cheese-ball duet “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now.” You can see some of it in this trailer.
Twenty-seven years after Mannequin, the undeniable ’80s song (co-written by Albert Hammond, Sr., by the way) is having another pop culture moment. Earlier this month, Starship (which now features only one original member, Mickey Thomas) performed it at the Streamy Awards, a low-budget ceremony for YouTubers who probably have no idea who Starship is.
Then this week Blake Shelton lip-synced on Fallon.
Is 2014 ready for a Starship comeback? I’ve always liked “Jane”…
More on this story as it develops, obviously. Your best and worst comments from the week are below.

Lame. You have to make art for yourself. By kowtowing to the public reaction she’s actually doing the exact opposite. She’s making the music other people want, not the music she wanted to make. |

Tom, you forgot about her LPs “Geidi Primes” and “Halfaxa” both released in 2010. I was going to let the “Visions, her 2012 debut.” line slide, but then I read the “scrapped the entire sophomore album” and realized that fact checking was required. |

I saw these guys for the first time at a festival a few weekends ago (Lockn – we went for Wilco, who played two sets). I thought they were pretty cool. One night, they had Steve Winwood play with them and they played an epic version of “Dear Mr. Fantasy.” Great guitar player and an extremely inoffensive band, at least to me. The tone of this article is not very cool. But these guys don’t have nearly the talent of Ariana Grande, so I guess that’s why Chris doesn’t like them. |

True game changer. Hate on ‘em all you want. This might be the very best album of the 2000?s. I would argue a couple others above it but damn it’s so friggn’ good. |

“The War On Drugs Can Suck My Fucking Dick” is blunt, unpoetic, and self-referential enough to be an actual Sun Kil Moon song. |

People are too hard on Grimes. And they should know better not to push anyone named Grimes too far. |

I’m pretty sure that this is the ULTIMATE first world problem. The hassle of getting a free U2 album on your power phone or your computer which you are the owner of. #thestruggle |

This has nothing to do with her new music and may be slightly misogynistic but Jesus, hairy armpits. There is nothing more unattractive to me on a human body than a female with hairy armpits. Makes me downright sick to my stomach. Grimes is obviously not beholden to my views of attractiveness but I had to vent, that pic will stick with me for the rest of the day. |

I do not listen to rap. This is not a racist thing. It’s just that I like melody. And interjecting a female to sing a chorus wholly unconnected to the rest of the song doesn’t work for me as “melody”. That being said……. Ready to Die is considered by most to be one of the true master works of rap. And I know people who claim Big to be the single greatest MC of all time. Go check out the 20th anny piece running on Stereogum right now about Ready to Die. There are a handful of comments. And they are all one or two sentences. Then come back here and look at the comments regarding the 10 year anny of Funeral. There is a very striking difference between the two sets of comments. Funeral digs into the listener on a level that you can’t put your finger on. It’s universal truths speak to anybody. Ready to Die is of a specific time speaks of a specific truth. Again, please spare me your “racist” hate. I just find the passion exhibited (or lack thereof) in the two threads to be somewhat telling. |

My cats would definitely listen to this whole thing. I play a lot of hip hop for them and they are always lamenting the fact that none of it seems to speak to them. |
