Rainer Maria Announce Reunion Show
Once upon a time, when it wasn’t considered embarrassing to have a favorite emo band, Rainer Maria were my favorite emo band. Now that it’s once again not embarrassing, every band from emo’s late-’90s/early-’00s halcyon era has reunited, and I am delighted to report that Rainer Maria are next on the list. The Wisconsin trio was never exactly emo; they always had a warm melodic interchange that was more Built To Spill than Get Up Kids. But they had a ton of gut-level heft to their harmonies, and if they can ride the emo-revival wave back to relevance, that works for me. Rainer Maria formed in 1995, and released five studio albums. Two of those albums, 1999’s Look Now Look Again and 2001’s A Better Version Of Me, are basically perfect. They played their final show at Brooklyn’s Northsix in 2006. And now Brooklyn Vegan reports that they’re getting together to play at least one more show at the Bowery Ballroom on New Years Eve. If we’re all real nice to them, maybe they’ll decide to add some more? I’m hoping so, anyway.
