Jordan Klassen – “Firing Squad” & “Falling” (Haim Cover) (Stereogum Premiere)
Canadian musician Jordan Klassen describes his music as folk, but judging from the songs on his upcoming single, it’s more like the Merriweather Post Pavilion version of folk. Klassen, who hails from Vancouver and Calgary, plays melodious, straightforward tunes, yet there’s a whimsical spirit about them that suggests they could veer into fantasy at a moment’s notice. A-side “Firing Squad” is so poppy I can almost imagine it getting top 40 radio airplay. Still, the feeling is more “winsome, uptempo indie-pop” than “faceless assembly-line hit.” There’s real personality in it, and that personality shines through in Klassen’s transformative, dreamlike cover of Haim’s “Falling,” which serves as the B-side. Check out both tracks below.
